St. Nikolay, the Wonderworker Church
“Saint Nikolay, the Wonderworker” church is the successor of the old pre-liberation church.
The prominent Saint Nikola School was running thereto, which educated many bright young people from different parts of Bulgaria. Vasil Levski, the future Apostle of Freedom also studied there, during the period he lived with his uncle Hadzi Vasiliy in Stara Zagora (1855-1858).
The current church building was constructed in the early twentieth century to replace the old temple, destroyed during the devastation of the city during the battles of the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878). The frescoes were done by the artists Dimitar Gudzhenov and Nikola Kozhuharov. It was painted after 1924.
