Hilendarski convent
In the footsteps of Levski
Hilendarski convent was established next to the church „St.
Dimitar“ in the second half of the eighteenth century and is one of the oldest centres of the Revival in Stara Zagora. The first cell school in the city was here, where the enlightened monks taught their novices to write and read.
The connection of the convent to the brightest person in Bulgarian history is symbolic. Vasil Ivanov Kunchev - the future Apostle of Bulgarian freedom lived here , from 1855 to 1858 with his uncle Hadzi Vasiliy. During this period, Vasil Kunchev studied at Sveti Nikola boarding school, a renowned centre of the Revival education in the southern parts of Bulgaria.
The convent was destroyed during the burning of Stara Zagora during the Russo-Turkish War (1877/78) and rebuilt after the Liberation. It was turned into a museum after its restoration in 1979. The atmosphere of the room where Vasil Levski resided was restored – a modest convent room. A reconstruction was also been made to one of the classrooms of St. Nikola boarding school – an important educational centre in the second half of the 19th century.
A small exposition with photos and documents describes the three-year stay of Vasil Levski in Stara Zagora and his role in organizing the local revolutionary organization.
